Green is the new Black

At the end of November I got my paws on Kris Carr’s new book Crazy Sexy Diet. I’m quite comfortable calling this one a LIFE CHANGER.  The number one difference maker for me was getting more green in my diet.  I ordered a juicer, started experimenting with green smoothies and strive for 1/2 a plate of green at least 2-3x/day.

The difference? I lost 8 lbs during the holidays, kicked coffee, notice a more vibrant tone to my skin (which made more sense after reading this too: A Truly Healthy Glow) and I have a lot more energy for spreading Fit, Healthy & Beautiful love!

Here are some of my new favorite Green Juice and Green Smoothie recipes

(the best part is you can make them your own, I used some of Kris’, googled green smoothies and juices and tweaked some that were posted by various healthy people I follow on Twitter.  Feel free to do the same with mine!)

Go To Juice

Romaine, Kale, (Spinach optional), 1 Green Apple, 1 Carrot, 1/2 or 1 whole Cucumber (depending on the size), 1/2 lemon

Suggested tweaks:

  • I hate celery, so I don’t use it, but you may want to give it a try.
  • Sometimes I throw sprouts, broccoli stems, some parsley and/or a tiny bit of ginger root in there too.
  • I’ll also ditch the romaine and add more Kale and Spinach for a darker green juice.
  • If you like spicy, I accidentally bought mustard greens instead of kale once and it added quite a kick.

Choco-Coconut Green Smoothie

Coconut milk, water and dried organic unsulphured flakes, 3 romaine leaves, handful of spinach, 1 scoop chocolate whey protein

Banana Green Love

2oz coconut milk, 4oz coconut water, 2 oz almond milk, 4 stalks romaine, 3 mint leaves, 1/2 or 1 full banana, chocolate whey protein.

Pumpkin Spice Green Goodness

Just sub 2 scoops pumpkin puree for the banana and 1 scoop BSN Lean Dessert Warm Cinnamon Roll or any Vanilla protein for chocolate from the above recipe.

Have a favorite green juice or smoothie combo? Would love to hear about them in the comments below…

    Hey Liz,
Ever since you mentioned this, I’ve been trying to learn more about it – so glad you posted about your experience. A couple of questions:
    1. Do they taste as they seem they would, like veggies in juice form?
    2. How manageable is the cost for this type of “change”?

    • Liz DiAlto

Sarah, they taste surprisingly good, but yes veggies in juice form –that’s why I love the lemon/apple to cut the “just mowed the lawn” flavor.

In terms of budget, there’s a definite rise in the grocery bill, but if you consider the health benefits, (like for me, not getting sick while everyone else is including the roommate I share a bathroom with!), you save there, I also eat out WAY less (including random meals on the go) and kicked coffee (adios $4 lattes). You can also look into a CSA or check out local markets which are cheaper than say, Whole Foods.

    This is a great post!

I was wondering if you have noticed a difference in your smoothies using a juicer vs a good blender?

Do you use any green powders in addition to the raw veggies?

Thx for your help in advance!!

    • Liz DiAlto

Hi Ivry, you can’t really make a smoothie with a juicer, or a juice with a blender. Does that make sense? Personally I love both-but a good blender is an amazing investment because it’s much more versatile than a juicer.
