Why NOW is Awesome Timing and Not Knowing is Perfect

Now is always a good time to do anything AND there’s a lot of power in admitting when you don’t know stuff.

Top that sundae with a cherry called “but I want to figure it out” and you will be cooking with fire.

I was having a convo with some friends a few weekends ago about when people feel the need to announce “the type of person they are.”

In many cases, what they say is actually NOT the type of person they are or they wouldn’t have to tell you, it would be very clear.  So who they say they are is either who they wish they were, OR a way of giving themselves permission to act a certain way or say specific things (in some cases, shit*y things, but not always).

Here’s a few questions for you:

What type of person do you think you are?

How does that compare to who you really are?

What type of person do you want to be?

These are not questions with quick answers. They require, thought, honesty, maybe even some prayer, meditation, reflection or journaling.  Whatever helps you open up and get honest. What I’m saying is, it’s ok not to know, yet.

Taking the time to answer these questions, is totally worth your time though.  Moreso than say, watching Real Housewives or even my favorite show Burn Notice. But here’s the kicker…it’s much easier spend a few hours on a marathon of bad TV than an hour being introspective. Who the hell wants to look at them self, and have to admit what they like and don’t like?

Guess what? You already do this all the time in your thoughts, I just want you to take it one step farther and actually learn from it. In the past week alone, here are some of the things people have admitted to me about themselves:

  • I choose to react negatively
  • I’m an asshole because I ate a cookie
  • I’m bad at planning and I’m no good at preparing either
  • I don’t know what’s wrong with me
  • I know what I should be doing, I just don’t

If you’re here, on my site, reading this post, even if we’ve never “met” on FB, Twitter, in the blog comments, or yes, even in real life-I want you to know that I believe you’re better than all of this and you should start thinking and acting that way.

I posted this on Twitter yesterday:

You can get overwhelmed or you can get to work.  Life is too good to waste it worrying…getting my as* to work.

Taking control of your own health and happiness can be overwhelming.  That’s why I’m inviting you to join me in getting your as* to work-this is how you combat overwhelm, my pretties.  No pointing fingers, no reliving the past, no need for explanation.  Let’s just do this.  You might not be awesome at it, you may even fail.  That’s ok.  Not even trying though, that’s not ok.

“What is this ‘work’ you speak of, Liz?”

You tell me (I’m serious, in the comments below, tell me)-what do you need?  Here’s an easy way to tell, it’s probably the thing you avoid the most.  Personal growth, diet, exercise, spirituality, dating, relationships, stuff that bugs you about your family, your career.

A good place to start…

What are you tolerating in your life that you shouldn’t be? (this can range from people to circumstances)

What would be the benefits of eliminating this thing?

Enough with the vagueness, let’s get specific.  There are a lot of questions in this post, I want you to answer them in the comments.  There’s no judgement here-but there is a lot of love, support and a platform for progress.  Let’s get this conversation started.

“Life is now. There was never a time
when your life was not now, nor will there ever be.”

Great post, Liz! I get more “answers” now during my 10-min morning meditation than I ever did in the past groveling or gossiping or chatting with friends. We should make a conscious effort to eliminate the B.S. talk and love ourselves enough to look inside. We all deserve peace and balance in our lives!

I love this. I purposely set my alarm early so when I wake upI can hit snooze, lay in bed and pray, think, journal…whatever. clear my head, set intentions or give gratitude before I start my day. There’s a notable difference between the days I do this and the days I don’t. Thanks Alison-and check out her new site, people:

I love this post Liz. Such powerful questions. I’m working through some of this right now myself! The person who I am now, is not 100% true to the person I REALLY am, which is also the person I really WANT TO BE. Strange spot to be in… but I’m working on aligning things. Lots of love and AWESOME post! xo

I probably don’t need to remind you Steph, but be kind and gentle with yourself during this process…and have so much fun 🙂

  • Freea

    All great stuff Liz…as usual.

    Hum, ”
what am I tolerating that I shouldn’t be?”…you’re right, I need to give this some thought. I am a very introspective person by nature so this space is easy for me to get in to. Will keep you posted if anything comes from a few days of being with the questions.Thx again.

do you blog, Freea? I feel like so many people do not easily get into this space, you should talk about it and share your light w/ people!

I love this Liz – I think right now the thing I need the most & keep avoiding is taking some time away from my work. A little weird, but also kind of freeing.

Also last night I was reading “The Artist’s Way” and it mentioned taking a break from reading for a week… and it totally pushed my buttons since I love to read, and it keeps me away from too much introspection. Now I know I need to go “reading-free” for at least a week, because it scares me. 😉

I have been meaning to grab that book since Cathy + Erin talked about it in LA in Feb. I can relate to this, Nath. I order books from Amazon 2-3 at a time, and I haven’t actually finished one in months (including Double Double!)…which then makes me feel bad. ahhh…always a work in progress.

Great points indeed Liz. I was about to say it would be putting my health and wellness as a priority like I did today biking and then doing a kick ass bar strength class.

But on reflection it would be not berating myself when I don’t like yesterday, I mean I don’t get that negative it’s just not in my nature, but that little voice that nags at you and tells you perhaps you’re not all that for missing your workout. That’s what I want to work on saying `shut up’ to 🙂

Amen, Natalie. Tell that bitch to take a hike!
