Staten Island Hospital Hurricane Relief

I was more than happy to fall asleep last night to the buzzing sound of the generators that line my street here in the Financial District of NYC.  After a week of crashing at my bf’s apartment and trucking all over Manhattan for limited access to electricy, internet, and hot water, I felt really really spoiled.  Even though it was a mild inconvenience, we knew it was just a matter of time before things would be back to normal.
.

That is not the case for thousands of people in my hometown, Staten Island, NY.

My mom is the Senior VP of HR at Staten Island Hospital and her employees have been taking care of me since the day I was born. So instead of giving money to a big government organization like FEMA, I’d like to raise money for a specific community that means a lot to me and my family.

Staten Island Hospital is where I went when I fractured my wrist in second grade, where my little brother got his first stitches in his knee after flying over the handle bars of his bike when he was six, where I had hernia surgery in 2005, and where my dad got his knee replaced last January.

Because my mom has been working there for over 25 years, it’s not uncommon for me to walk down a hallway and see someone who remembers when i was four and hear something like, “OH MY GAWD!! Is this Elizabeth?! I can’t believe how grown up you awww!” [in their amazing Staten Island accents…], followed by a grabbing of my face or an enormous hug.

I even taught my first Zumba classes at the hospital’s Rehab gym two summers ago for nurses and staff members hospital-wide.
