MAKING RECEPTIVITY TANGIBLE
Receptivity can be one of those vague, “But what does that actually mean?!” type of topics. In actuality, it touches a lot more in our lives than we realize.
Any time you’re struggling to have any kind of experience you want to be having, it’s probably related to receptivity. When there’s ease and flow and things are showing up, or there’s an indicator that things are on the way, there’s a clear channel for receptivity. When things feels like a pushing a boulder up a hill, something is blocking receptivity.
This isn’t about blame or shame, there are many reasons why you might not be in as receptive a state as you would like to be. This session is designed to be super simple, as is the download I’ve created for you at wildsoulmovement.com/receptivity.
WOULD YOU RATHER BE RIGHT OR HAPPY?
The first time I encountered this question, it was flashing across a TV screen at a health club I used to work at in Washington DC back in 2010. It wasn’t until last year though, that the point finally landed for me, when a coach I was working with put it in simpler terms. She called it the “need to be right.”
The need to be right is pervasive because in many ways, the culture we live in requires us to be right in so many ways to progress and advance in life. And in some of those cases, it can be useful. It becomes a problem when we carry this need over into areas of our lives where it’s not helpful at all.
The need to be right usually comes from families of origin or some other source in our early upbringing or life experiences.
We operate in our worlds needing to be right in childhood, needing to follow the rules and fit in. There’s a lot of survival attached to it. When you’re a child you actually can’t take care of yourself, so you need to do things right in order to stay a part of the group (family unit, friends, school, church, etc).
So initially, we develop these needs to be right in order to survive or try to progress in our lives such as in school and jobs, but then we apply them to other areas. For example: simple things like needing to be right that the dishwasher must be loaded a certain way, or more intense things like needing to be right that life is hard for you because xyz.
The need to be right is also born out of a fear of getting it wrong. Some have experienced very real consequences for getting things wrong, ranging from physical abuse, shame, losing out on something, or being ostracized in some other way. And you carry that with you.
You’ll notice when you download the worksheet that a lot of these points are negative in nature. Those who are into self-help and the law of attraction might not want to focus on things that are “negative”, but completely denying anything negative on your life is like putting a band-aid over a dirty wound.
By addressing the negative, it’s like cleaning out the wound so that you can move on to the healing part. It’s actually healthier and more integrated to address it. You don’t have to get stuck in it, but not addressing is a bypass. It will have to come out at some point.
