How To Deal With Self Doubt

I have to come clean with you.

I punked out on filming the video for Booty Shakin’ Tuesday yesterday. There I was, music geared up, camera rolling…I even did a few practice runs (which I don’t normally do) and I wussed out because I felt silly dancing in front of the camera alone.

I was so upset with myself, I wasn’t nervous last time.

And I dance all the time! I freaking love dancing! I do it in my apartment in my underwear, while I’m waiting for the subway if a hot jam comes on my iPod, I used to teach 5 Zumba classes a week, AND I even danced on stage in front of hundreds of people at RHH Live (see pic below, I’m all the way on the right with a ridiculous expression on my face, we’re doing one of my favorite moves, “the juicy booty”).

So what the hell?!

I got nervous and I listened to the chatter in my head.

“I’m not a “real” dancer.”
“I don’t ‘know what I’m doing’…”
“There are so many people on YouTube who can do this better than me.”

Then I remembered, technically I’m not dancing in a room by myself. You’ll be there with me, in your living room, maybe at your desk, in your kitchen-who knows. So I told my brain to shut the fudge up, let my body take over and busted some moves.

This was a good reminder that nobody is impervious to self doubt. That bastard will creep up on you when you least expect it. So from now on when it does, I want you to think of me, the juicy booty, and this mantra:

Because I doubt is why I must.
